Then…

Ever wonder how a billion-dollar facility handles millions of bags per year?  Or why those hands reach out at you as you drive down the Guadalupe Expressway?  On February 24th you can ask those and more questions – and get the answers!

The almost-complete Norman Y. Mineta International Airport hosts a small group of TYPs on an all-access tour on February 24th.  First, enjoy a reception hosted by the airport followed by a full-tour of the facility.  Unless you end up working on the airport staff, this may be the only time you can see these areas of Silicon Valley’s cutting-edge travel hub…

January Social

10 12 2009

Bay 101 hosted over 75 TYPs at the first monthly social for 2010!  After a sellout success at The Brit in Almaden this December, TYPs enjoyed generous samples from what is possibly San Jose’s best kept secret – Bay 101’s restaurant, Sutter’s Broiler.  Mixing, mingling, and tours led by veteran gamer, Tom, were a  hit.

November Habitat for Humanity Build

1 11 2009

Habitat for Humanity

Swing a hammer for a cause.

On Saturday, November 7, TYP joins Habitat for Humanity Silicon Valley to help construct a home for a family in need.  Over the past 23 years, this organization has helped hard-working, low-income families earn home-ownership.  With the recent completion of their 50th home in Silicon Valley, Habitat for Humanity looks onward to complete yet another house for a deserving family, and invited TYP to participate!  Even if you’ve never held a hammer, volunteers of all skill-levels are welcome – Habitat for Humanity provides all the training you need!

To demonstrate our appreciation for the valuable work Habitat performs for the Silicon Valley community, there is a $10+ donation suggestion to join the build.  All proceeds will go toward the completion of  the home, and will be presented to the organization that morning.

If you cannot attend the event but are so-inclined to make a donation through TYP to Habitat, it is greatly appreciated.

Tank Crawl recap

10 09 2009

Tank Crawl & Sharks Game

On Monday, October 12th TYP hosted a special-access tour to the HP Pavilion - a Tank Crawl!  TYPs saw everything from the top down, literally.  40 TYPs were guided on a special tour of the “ins and outs” of the Shark Tank, from the catwalks to the media box, everything but the locker room (something about it being used on game-night..).  After the tour, the group enjoyed what hockey should be, or what could have been.  The Sharks took on the Arizona Coyotes, however the ending shoot-out wasn’t the high-point of the evening.  This event sold out almost immediately, fortunately for TYP but unfortunately for those who didn’t get tickets.

TYPassport – September 29th

10 09 2009

Black Ridge Vineyards, perched in the hills above downtown Los Gatos, opened their exclusive tasting area to TYPs and the exciting, young talent from Opera San Jose.  Although a bit cool, the views were spectacular and the wine, food and opera – even better!

Upon arrival guests were greeted by a Passport and a surprise treat – a glass of BRV’s 2007 Viogner!  At 6:30, Jack Wimberly (Chair of TYP) started the evening off thanking Cosmopolitan Catering, Black Ridge Vineyards, Opera San Jose and the San Jose Silicon Valley Chamber of Commerce for making the event happen.  Virginia Perry, head of marketing and development for OSJ introduced 3 of the 6 guest-performers to kick off the Passport tour.

OSJ continued to intersperse TYP’s wine tasting with opera-favorites from Italian to French, including favorites used in TV commercials and movies.  It was a great opportunity to peek inside one of San Jose’s classical arts groups.  As the evening progressed along, each guest received a stamp on their Passport after trying a taste of all 4 BRV wines (Pinot Noir, Merlot, San Andreas, and Cabernet Sauvignon), enjoying bites such as Kobe beef filet tartar with white truffle oil on a brown-butter crostini and squab two-ways with chantrelle mushroom risotto & a bing cherry reduction.  Two words, the first being “Holy”, best-describe the food and wine!

At the end of the evening, prizes were raffled off including: a bottle of BRV Merlot, a bottle of San Andreas (BRV’s great red-blend), and complimentary wine-tasting for up to 8.  Winners of these prizes were Dan Winter from Burr Pilger Mayer, Teresa Stewart from Boething Treeland and Nicholas Adams from Rotaract.

Guests who purchased wine or joined the BRV Wine Club were entered to win the Grand Prize, dinner for 2 at Morton’s, The Steak House downtown San Jose (worth $120) and 2 tickets to Opera San Jose’s opening performance of La Cenerentola (worth $160).  The winner of the Grand Prize was Jonathan Gonzales of Poco Solar, pictured here with Suzanne von Briesen from Adobe Systems.

Many enjoyed the event, calling it the “best TYP event yet”.  As the group formalizes and moves into Fall, more unique programs are schedules, like the Tank Crawl & Sharks game (which sold out in a few days) and upcoming community outreach project.  Stay tuned for details!

Our Community, Your Community

24 08 2009

I was interviewed last week by a reporter from San Antonio who asked “what makes Silicon Valley appealing to young professionals?”  As I thought through the usual suspects: decent living-wages; fantastic weather; or access to metropolises, beaches and snow, I couldn’t put my finger on what makes it truly unique and appealing.
